Square Terminal or Square Handheld? A straight answer

These are the two devices we get asked about most, and the two most often ordered the wrong way round. They are not competing products — they answer different questions.

The short version

• •Square Terminal takes the payment to the customer. It has a built-in receipt printer.
• •Square Handheld takes the order to the customer, and the payment too. It has no printer.

If the thing slowing your service down is walking back to the till to ring an order in, you want the Handheld. If it is walking a bill out and back, you want the Terminal.

Square Terminal

An all-in-one card machine with a receipt printer built into the body. It runs a full shift on a charge and keeps taking cards when the signal drops.

It suits you if:

• •You need a printed receipt at the point of payment
• •You take payment at the table, the door, or a market stall
• •You want one device that does everything without a separate till
• •You are a trade or mobile business getting paid on site

The printer is the deciding feature. Plenty of businesses buy the cheaper option and then discover they need paper receipts for their customers or their own reconciliation.

Square Handheld

A slim device built for taking orders on the floor and charging for them in the same motion. It is lighter, faster in the hand, and designed to be carried for a whole service.

It suits you if:

• •Your staff currently write orders down and walk them to a till
• •You run table service and want orders hitting the kitchen immediately
• •Covers per hour is the number you are trying to move
• •You already have a counter till and want to extend it onto the floor

The Handheld is not really a card machine with extras. It is a till you carry, which happens to take payment.

What people get wrong

Buying one Handheld for a big floor. If you have four sections, one device becomes a bottleneck and a source of arguments. Spec per section, not per site.

Buying a Terminal to fix order-taking. It will speed up payment and do nothing for the walk back to the till. The queue just moves.

Forgetting the printer. If you need kitchen tickets, neither of these replaces a kitchen printer or a kitchen display. Budget for it.

If you genuinely cannot decide

Start with the one that fixes your worst bottleneck, and add the other later — they run on the same account, the same menu and the same reporting, so nothing is wasted by starting small.
