Square for barbershops

Walk-ins and booked chairs on one screen, deposits that stop no-shows, and a counter that clears a card in seconds.

barbershops using a Square point of sale system

A barbershop runs on two things a till usually handles badly: a queue that forms without warning, and a diary that only works if people turn up. Here is how we set Square up for a typical three- to six-chair shop.

The counter

A Square Stand on the counter runs the till, the diary and the card payment from one screen, with a second Terminal alongside so one client can pay while the next is still being finished. Chip, PIN and contactless are built in — there is no separate card machine to pair, charge or lose behind the mirror.

Each barber gets their own login, so takings, tips and commission are split correctly at the end of the week without anyone doing sums on a pad.

Bookings and walk-ins together

Square Appointments puts booked slots and walk-ins on the same board. Clients book online, through Instagram, or from a link on their receipt, and the shop sees one view of the day rather than a paper diary and a phone.

Automatic reminders go out the day before. That alone moves the no-show rate for most shops we set up.

Deposits that hold

A card is held at booking and your cancellation window is enforced by the system, not by whoever is on the desk. Nobody has to have the awkward conversation, which is the real reason cancellation policies go unenforced.

For longer services — colour, restyles, a double slot — a deposit taken up front is the difference between a protected chair and a wasted hour.

What it does after the cut

Client history, preferred barber, products bought and how often they come in all sit in one record. Loyalty runs off the till, so regulars are recognised without anyone having to remember. Retail products sell through the same catalogue as services, with one stock count.

Common questions

Can two barbers take payment at once?

Yes. The Stand runs the counter and a Reader takes a second payment in parallel, or each chair can have its own Reader paired to the same account.

Does it handle tips split between barbers?

Yes. Tips are recorded against the barber who did the work and reported per person, so the split at the end of the week is already done.

What about walk-ins when the diary is full?

Walk-ins sit on the same board as bookings, so the shop can see real availability rather than guessing. A waitlist fills slots when somebody cancels.
